From the Couple: We met freshman year of college (2007) at Miami University. We lived in the same freshman dorm, McBride Hall. We became best friends over the course of the year & were dating by the end of freshman year.
THE PROPOSAL: It was truly an unforgettable night. We had been dating for a long time at this point so I knew that it would be happening, but Tyler somehow pulled this off without me suspecting a thing. Well maybe a little, but we’ll get to that.Tyler really wanted to make sure that it was a surprise so we went to a nice restaurant but not too nice. It was a place downtown Chicago within walking distance of our apartments so there was not much to suspect at this point. The after dinner plan was to go see Cassidy Pope, one of my favorite artists from one of our favorite shows, “The Voice”. There was a big outdoor country festival happening right on the lake & Tyler told me that he had after show passes to go see her at the Adler Planetarium. I was really excited! We went to the lakefront where we got dropped off a little ways from the planetarium. I thought it was a little weird that we were getting dropped off so far away, but Tyler insisted that it would be better because of the traffic from the festival. We walked along the lakeshore path taking pictures & admiring the city we call home.
Eventually I started to get a little cold & this is when I saw Tyler had been holding on to his coat with a death grip. I asked for his coat & this is where I thought that maybe he was hiding something. He apologized & said that he was freezing & was about to put it on. I thought it was a bit strange, but I went with it anyways. We continued to walk along the lake & out onto the peninsula that the planetarium was located. This is where we came across a strange site. I saw flower pedals, candles, & picture frames, but it was facing the opposite direction. I asked Tyler what it was & he shrugged & said “not sure… looks like maybe someone is proposing.” Still didn’t think anything of it, but as we got closer I turned around to look at the pictures & saw they were of us! It was a beautiful spot overlooking the entire city from the lake & was right where we used to watch fireworks over Navy Pier in our early dating days (one of the photos was of this date years ago). I loved it! Of course I said yes. One of my best friends, Rachel, was hiding taking pictures as it all happened, we stayed out there & celebrated for a bit. It was amazing! I thought it was all over, but little did I know that the night was just starting. We drove over to a bar right on the Chicago River where I found both of our families waiting there to celebrate with us. It was really surprising seeing everyone there. We had a few cocktails & cupcakes before Tyler had one more surprise. He told me to look over the edge of the wall & there was a boat that he rented for all of us to get on & cruise the river! It was amazing & very romantic. We cruised the river sipping on champagne & hanging with family. It was the perfect ending to an unforgettable night.
